THE PATHS

And Then the Fox Appeared

Chang used the landscape of the Abitibi River as the background for the story unfolding along the banks. The prince, no longer little, faces his fox across the river. The river is passionate and violent. The land is austere and empty. There are no footprints in the snow, neither past nor future in sight.

“I win,” said the fox, “because of the color of the corn.”
